Flushed with the success of their landmark R2 launch, Industrial Automaton rushed to capitalize on their new dominance of the astromech droid market. The R4-series agromech droid was a highly successful attempt to capture a new market prospect — the Outer Rim urbanite who was more likely to have a souped-up landspeeder parked in their garage than an X-wing. Accordingly, the R4 agromech droid was designed for life outside the pristine hangar bay. It was simpler, tougher, and cheaper than previous R3-series models. The R4-P was a truncated Industrial Automaton R4-series droids incorperated into the Delta-7 Aethersprite-class light interceptors of the Jedi Order, which had fuselages too slim to house full-sized astromech droids. Based upon Anakin Skywalker's alterations to R4-P17, they were modified by Kuat Systems Engineering to feature the dome of an R2-series astromech droid in place of the conical head of an R4 unit, creating what was essentially a hybrid of the two models. As a result, the R4-P could store up to ten sets of hyperspace jump coordinates in its memory, rather than the single jump of a standard R4 unit. When the Delta-7B Aethersprite-class light interceptor gained popularity, many R4-Ps were retrofitted with standard-sized astromech bodies. | ||
